Right from the very beginning, as soon as the fruit, gathered in auspicious conditions – warm and largely free from rain – was in the fermentation vats, it was clear that 2009 had followed the general run of '9' vintages and was very good indeed. I had no hesitation, even as early as October 2009, in placing 2009 up with 2005 and 1999 as the very best of the last 25 years. The vintage was also quite plentiful, as was 1999.

It was a splendid summer. From the middle of May onwards the sun shone; it was warm though rarely very hot; it was dry without being parched; and these favourable conditions continued through until the end of the harvest and beyond.

Not all was totally perfect. There were May hailstorms variously in Morey-Saint-Denis (Laurent Ponsot's Clos de la Roche produced half a normal crop) and the southern end of Gevrey-Chambertin. The southern Mâconnais and the northern Beaujolais were also affected at this time. The flowering in parts of the Côte d'Or was rather drawn out, resulting in the possibility of uneven ripeness at the time of the harvest. (As it turned out, the warm summer, plus judicious green harvesting of the more backward bunches, reduced this potential problem to a minimum). Half-way through July there was a very wet week-end which gave rise to fears of an attack of mildew and oidium. And the vintage in Chablis, which otherwise had had an almost perfect summer, was interrupted by two days of rain.

But by and large the 2009 weather conditions could hardly have been better. August especially, in contrast to recent years, was magnificent. Remember the old saying 'Août fait le moût' (August makes (creates) the must). September was warm with a drying north wind, preserving the acidities which in the light of the fine weather and generous harvest might have begun to sink to levels close to dangerously low. In fact though these levels were not by any means high, apparently the pHs are quite normal. The fruit was so healthy it was hardly necessary to do a triage.

Naturally, in view of the benign conditions, it was an early harvest. But not dangerously early, as in 2003. Most importantly, the growers could take their time, as it was not too hot. The harvest started towards the end of the first week of September in the Beaujolais, a few days later in the Mâconnais, and as early as that in some vineyards in the Côte d'Or. By September 14th it was fully under way in the Côte de Beaune and even traditional late pickers in the Côte de Nuits such as the Domaine Ponsot were out in their vineyards by the 21st. By October 1st all but some vines in the Hautes Côtes remained unharvested. Chablis, meanwhile, started on September 11th, stopped because of the rain, started again a week later and was finished by the 20th.

The red wines have naturally high alcoholic degrees without being blockbusters. One grower said that he was going to be careful about prolonging macerations for fear of creating monsters. Others, worried about the size of the crop, have performed a light saigner to concentrate the must, or where they feared there might be over-ripeness, have made their team perform overtime and finished their harvest in six days rather than ten.

In contrast to 2008 there was little malic acidity, and the malo-lactic fermentations took place quickly. Colours were very good. The tannins were very ripe, and even at three years on, when you might expect them to be a bit harsh, not aggressive. And there is no lack of grip and definition to go with the inherent richness of the vintage. Moreover, and this is in fact rarer in large, splendidly ripe vintages than you might think (often it is the somewhat less favoured years which excel), there is no lack of terroir definition.

My one initial fear was the level of acidity in the top red wines. As I wrote in October 2009: what we may have is a repeat of 1985, where we effectively had two sets of wines. The first matured fast and were fully mature in advance of their tenth birthday. The others had hardly even begun to soften by then, and only began to show agreably five years after that. Nearly three years on, while there are certainly some which lack a bit of bite, the majority of the 2009s, as I state above, do not lack grip.

A great vintage? Not quite. Though there are more than a few single bottles which are indisputably great, overall the 2009s do not have the concentration and depth of the 2005s. Nineteen ninety-nine is the closest parallel. Yet, as we felt at the three year on tasting: 1999-plus. It is a tribute to modern élevage that there is a consistency in the 2009 vintage which was not there a decade ago. Moreover - and this is always encouraging – the quality of the generic wines is very high. This is a vintage to stock up with the Bourgognes Rouges of your favorite growers (which you can then have fun offering blind to your guests in three or four years time.)

I await the three-year-on tasting of the 2010s, a vintage which is showing better and better now the wines are in bottle, and promises to profound and classic, if a little more austere than the 2009s, with impatience.

The white wines in the Côte d'Or are attractive but not as successful. Yes: there is no lack of ripe, succulent fruit, but here I do have to search more extensively for the sort of reserve I seek; the austerity at this stage that indicates the wine will be better at eight years old than at four. The quality in the Mâconnais as well as Chablis has been to some extent compromised by their local weather conditions. In general I prefer the 2008s and 2010s in both cases, but there are no long faces. It may be the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise have got the best of it this year, as far as white wines are concerned; but elsewhere growers are nevertheless more than happy. The Beaujolais crus, on the other hand, are terrific. These are the best Beaujolais I have enjoyed for many a year.

For the first time, thanks largely to Jasper Morris, the Group organized a white wine tasting, which took place chez lui in June 2012. This tasting was just of the Côte d'Or wines. The Chassagnes were the most disappointing of the three main villages, but we found some good Pulignys. Of the grands crus, the Corton-Charlemagnes left something – indeed much – to be desired, and there were some howlers elsewhere. Overall, the tasting was disappointinly uneven.

The notes on the following red wines come from two main tastings. In March 2012 there was the annual Domaines Familiaux tasting in Paris, and this was succeeded by our own Group tasting at the end of August. In June, as have said, we had already made a comprehensive tasting of the white wines. The latter two tastings were blind; the former open. Inter alia I tasted a number of 2009s on my annual trip to the USA in April. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leroy wines were tasted separately in their cellars in Vosne-Romanée.

Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Les Quatre Journaux, Domaine Louis Latour 17.0From 2022

Medium-full colour. Hidden nose. But no lack of personality. Good depth. Medium-full body. At first this showed very lovely fruit on the palate. Ripe and with no lack of grip. But it evolved fast in the glass. Much less impressive at the end.

Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Domaine Leroy19.5 From 2021

Very lovely, perfumed, Chambolle-ish nose. Fullish body. Very complex. Lovely harmony. Very high class fruit. Splendid, long, lingering finish. Excellent.

Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti18.0 From 2019

Good colour. Soft, fragrant nose. As always at the DRC a touch of the feminine here. His isn't singing today. There is something a little astringent at the end. Good balance and stylish fruit, but it doesn't seem as complete as the Grands-Echézeaux or the Richebourg.

Richebourg, Domaine du Clos Frantin (Albert Bichot)19.5 From 2022

Medium-full colour. Full-flavoured, aromatic nose. Slightly four square at first. Full bodied, concentrated and vigorous. Generous, very fine grip and intensity. Lots of dimension and a touch of spice. Very fine indeed.

Medium-full colour. Slightly gamey on the nose. Fullish, some tannin, some oak. Medium-full body. Aromatic, rich, voluptuous and seductive. A meaty wine. Very fine.

Richebourg, Domaine Leroy 19.0From 2022

A bigger wine than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant. And because it is slightly reduced it's a bit clumsy today on the attack. But there is very promising fruit on the follow-through. Long. Multi-dimensional. Very fine indeed.

Richebourg, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair18.5From 2021

Medium-full colour. Fat, slightly animal/gamey nose. But rich and substantial. As it evolved it showed very good class, grip and depth. Fullish body. Firm. Lots of concentration. Powerful at first, but very imressive at the end.

Fine colour. Rich, closed, powerful and concentrated on the nose. Lots of wine here. Full bodied. Very good tannins. Profound and multi-dimensional. Excellent fruit. Splendid grip. This is really most impressive.

La Romanée, Domaine du Vicomte Liger-Belair See note

Medium-full colour. Somewhat spicy and reduced on the nose. Very good grip, though. Medium-full body. Lots of wine here and of very high qiality. But is is difficult to discern how high. If not reduced, I noted at the time, perhaps the best of the flight (of Romanée-Saint-Vivants and neighbouring monopolies).

La Tache, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti20.0From 2027

Fine colour. Really quite closed on the nose: even more so than the Richebourg. Lovely perfumed cassis nose. A big, backward, quite tannic wine with excellent grip. More austere than the Richbourg. But it has even more depth and intensity. Very lovely.

Romanée-Conti, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti20.0From 2024

Just a little less colour than the Tache. Not a lot on the nose at present. You have to go searching for it. What there is is very poised and very harmonious as well as being very complex and classy. The fruit is more red flavoured than the Tache. Marvelously fine and intense. Really quite excellent.

Le Musigny, Domaine Leroy19.5From 2021

Still very, very closed. Fat, rich and concentrated on the nose. Very lovely, balanced, fragrant fruit. This is very complex and the finish is excellent.

Fullish colour. Closed in on the nose. But profound and classy. The fruit is ripe and succulent. Medium-full body. Very good grip. Not a blockbuster but ripe and balanced and fresh and very stylish. Very harmonious. Very lovely.

Bonnes Mares, Domaine Georges Roumier 17.5 From 2021

Good colour. Very subtle. The wine seems to lack its usual volume. There is a slight absence of fat and concentration and on this occasion it was eclipsed by his Cras. We'll see.

(At the Three Year On tasting the wine was also a little disapponting.)

Bonnes-Mares, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé 17.5 From 2021

Fullish colour. Rich, profound nose. Very high class. Long and lovely. Lots of energy and very good grip. Fullish body. The attack was intense and very promising but the follow through showed rather less energy.

Bonnes-Mares, Domaine de la Vougeraie13.0From 2016

Medium-full body. Soft, slightly rustic nose. For a Bonnes Mares this is cheap Stuff. Medium body. A little sweet.

(How can they make something as bad as this when their Musigny and other wines are so good?)

Clos Saint-Denis, Très Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Ponsot 18.5 From 2020

Medium-full colour. Still rather reticent on the nose. Touches of spice. Medium-full body. This doesn't sing today. It's all a bit closed in and ungenerous. But very good ripe fruit, good tannins and good grip. Long and certainly very fine.

Clos des Lambrays, Domaine des Lambrays 17.5 From 2018

Medium-full colour. Soft nose. Some of the stems evident. Not a block-buster. Medium to medium-full body. A slight touch of astringence. Ripe but not complete. Quite forward. Is this a bad bottle?

Clos de la Roche, Maison Bichot 18.0From 2020

Medium-full colour. Firm, youthful nose. Good depth here. Medium to medium-full body. Fresh, stylish, ample fruit. Finishes long and positively. Fine.
