It was perhaps inevitable that after the glorious gifts on offer in 1999, 2000 should prove a disappointment, and further, that it should have been unduly criticized at the outset, especially from those who had widely bought in the previous campaign and who were disinclined to put more than a token toe in the waters of 2000.
In fact the vintage is not at all bad. Only so-so in the Côte de Beaune as far as the red wines are concerned, but very satisfactory in white and highly agreeable in the Côte de Nuits. We all need wines which evelve in the medium term, like the 2000s, not just the restaurant business. Moreover the size of the crop, as can be seen from the figures above, was generous, leading to price stability, at least in euros.
Weather Conditions
The first few months of the year were warm (February was wet; March was dry), leading to an early bud-break. April was cool – but not so cold that there was any frost damage – and inclement; but after the middle of May the weather improved. The vines flowered rapidly and uniformly in the first week of June, promising a large and early harvest.
We then came to July. This was cold and miserable; one of the coolest in recent years, and with no lack of rain. Nevertheless, the evolution of the fruit remained ahead of previous vintages. August was warm, setting the platform for a potential quality which despite the rain in September, would not be washed out entirely. Août fait le moût (August makes the must) as the French vignerons point out.
The harvest started in the Côte de Beaune on Monday 11th September, and was immediately halted by a storm in the afternoon and evening of the Tuesday. As much as 75 mm of rain fell in some of the Côte de Beaune villages. Volnay seems to have weathered the worst of it. This immediately compromised what a few days previously had looked very promising. Less rain fell in the white wine villages, and in the Côte de Nuits, which in general had had a drier summer anyway, and was to remain drier in the unsettled period which followed. The Côte de Nuits also benefited from the fact that the vintage normally follows a week or so after the Côte de Beaune. The effects of the great downpour could be allowed to drain away, and the fruit to dry out. As a result, the incidence of rot was a great deal reduced, and some cuvées in the Côte de Nuits attained natural alcoholic levels of 13° or more.
It says a lot for the perfectionism which you see just about everywhere in today's Burgundy – sorting tables and so on – that there is little evidence of botrytis in the 2000s. Yes, some wines are a bit loose and soft-centred, others just plain dull and one-dimensional, and acidities in the Côte de Beaune are rather low. But from the motorway north – the dividing line being here rather than between Ladoix and Corgoloin – the wines are more than satisfactory: indeed fresh and succulent and even quite terroir specific. At ten years old they are now fully ready. Open your bottles and enjoy them.
